I think "What is your favorite video game genre?" is too obvious a question. So this weekend's question is "What video game genre can't you stand?" or even "What video game genre(s) do you struggle with?" That second question is an easy one for me to answer: I can't seem to get a grasp on the turn-based tactics genre. Turn-based tactics games involve grids that players move their party around to take out enemies. My first brush with this genre was 3DS game Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars. Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, a GBA Ambassador game, came next. I failed miserably at both. Perhaps I just need practice at this foreign genre!
So let's hear it, readers! Which video game genres can't you stand?

Excellent question - definitely being approached from the opposite direction as usual. I liked your answer though - not because I agree, but to the contrary that is probably one of my two or three favorite genres (along with RPG and Sports).
ReplyDeleteI don't really have a genre I hate.
*settles firmly on top of the fence*
I would say fitness is the one that interests me the least. I did the Wii Fit thing with my wife and kids for about a year before we all sorta lost interest.
Platforming would probably my 2nd least favorite, which is kind of funny when you consider I played a ton of platforming games on the NES for years and still enjoy especially well-made ones like New Super Mario Bros. While I used to be great at games like Contra (shooting/platforming hybrid), Super Mario Bros, etc - I really don't do as well with them anymore.
Super Meat Boy is probably the perfect example. I could appreciate the game on a technical level, but I really just did not enjoy playing it all that much. It was a bit harder than I liked, and I wasn't engaged enough with the game to struggle through the escalating challenges.
What about simulation? I was under the impression you didn't like those kinds of games, either.
DeleteAt first I thought, "HE DOESN'T LIKE PLATFORMERS?!" But thinking about it, platformers can easily fall into the boring category. And one of the things I hate the most is a game that I just can't get invested in.
I still love all of the Super Mario games, though. I think what sets them apart from other platformers is the array of moves Mario has. It takes skill to master all of them so that they can be used fluidly. Plus, Nintendo tends to place obstacles in Super Mario games that require clever use of jumps, spins, and power-ups. I find that to be really compelling.
Simulation is an interesting one for me - I generally play them for limited bursts because they're one of my wife's favorite types of games - like Roller Coaster Tycoon. But I would agree that Simulation is definitely right there with my least-favorites and not a genre I put much time into.
DeleteI figured the platformers one would be surprising at first - I mean, I played tons of them over the years, and I was quite good at them, but now with the exception of a few, most of them just don't hold my interest.
I think you mirror my thoughts on Mario precisely though - they do so many different things, offering some puzzle-like qualities at times that I enjoy that series so much more than 99% of the rest of the platforming genre.
I can't handle RTS games, and I'm pretty poor at real fighting games (not counting Smash Bros.)

I can't stand sports video games! If I want to play sports, I'll take a gym class, lol. :D
ReplyDeleteGrand Theft Anything. Or any game that casts the player in the role of a criminal. I prefer to take my imagination and leisure time in a far more positive direction! :)
