I don't like to be horrified. Whether it's games, movies, or books, the "horror" genre is the last I would deliberately seek out.
I wouldn't call Metroid Prime a "horror" game, but it has a distinctly spooky atmosphere about it. It's terrifying, but in a very satisfying way. Does that make sense? Well, what if I just told you that I have screamed, out loud, many times while playing it?
What's the game's secret? It's got to be a combination of a lot of things, including art direction, level design, and music and sound effects. Especially music and sound effects. Just listening to some of the boss themes will send shivers down my spine, no problem. Sometimes you hear things. You hear, but don't see. You move forward a couple of steps, ever so cautious, look around for whatever's making the noise, and still you don't see.
I think atmosphere is the calling card of the Metroid series. I've played a lot of Metroid games, but none boast the same raw, well-defined creepy feel as Metroid Prime. Then again, I haven't even reached the second or third Prime games yet.
I recommend you do not play the Wii game Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition. Or any game with Tingle in it.
ReplyDeleteHaha! Too late on the Tingle thing I'm afraid! I've already been scarred for life because of that! But yeah, none of the living dead for me!
DeleteI so know what you mean! While playing Metroid Prime for the first time I almost cried! >:O
ReplyDeleteI know right?! It's awesome! So I'm really immersed in the game, and then BAM! My dad busts through the basement door, which is really noisy, and I scream like my ten-year-old sister!
DeleteBahahahahahahahaha I can totally see that!
DeleteYep, he did the same thing like two other times! And I screamed every time.
DeleteHey there Holly, I'm JTA, and I have a site over at www.nintendo-kingdom.blogspot.com. I noticed that you're also a Nintendo site, and I was wondering if we could do a link exchange? If you're up for it, please comment on one of my recent posts! Thanks!

I think First Person games in general are a bit more likely to scare a gamer than most other perspectives. The limited view and the way things come RIGHT at your screen make titles that might not be intentionally scary, like Metroid Prime or Bioshock, much tenser affairs.
ReplyDeleteyeah every time something pops up and im like holy crap!
ReplyDeleteWhen you're all immersed in the experience, you get pretty jumpy! The darn space pirates that would jump down from the ceiling! Aaaaah!
