My first (and last) impressions of BIT.TRIP COMPLETE

I can't really say that I hated Bit.Trip Complete for Wii...okay, yes I can. I just didn't catch the drift, I guess. But seriously, take my opinion with a grain of salt, because I only played three of the six games. This is how it went:

I played a lot of Bit.Trip Beat, which has the player use motion to control a vertical paddle on the left side of the screen to deflect oncoming pixels. It was okay, but I just didn't ever connect with it. I like a game that you have to invest yourself in. Beat was challenging, yet it was almost like it was too simple or something. I found myself simply staring at the screen with a dazed expression on more than one occasion.

Next I gave Bit.Trip Core a shot. In it, the player controls a plus-shaped laser that can fire in four directions in order to shoot pixels coming in from all directions. I got a headache trying to follow what was going on, so my time with this one was quite short.

Finally I played Bit.Trip Runner. I thought this one would appeal to me the most, so I skipped I think two others to see if it would redeem the game in my eyes. It did to a certain extent. Runner has some great platforming gameplay. The fact that I got frustrated towards it was actually a good sign. It means I was invested. As fun as Runner was, however, it didn't make up for what I saw to be a lackluster experience otherwise.

Like I said, however, I didn't actually play all of the games in this collection. Give it a chance, and maybe you'll find this game suits you better than it suited me.

  1. I got Bit Trip Saga on the 3DS for Christmas and I felt the same way. It was not bad, but I did not really see what people loved it so much for.

  2. Good, fair commentary in my opinion. I actually scheduled some posts on bit.trip beat and bit.trip runner to go up on my blog in the near future, and I shared a lot of your sentiments. I know a lot of people are big fans of these games, but I came away pretty 'meh' despite the fact I really liked the music and visuals - the gameplay for both of those titles was wear for me. Runner in particular frustrated me.

    1. Thanks!

I think Runner could really benefit from the use of checkpoints, so that you're not having to play the first minute or so over and over again, only to forget where you messed up in the first place and messing up there again and again. But yeah, I definitely agree with you about the music.
